Pool Construction
The long-term performance of a custom swimming pool depends heavily on how its structure is built. Excavation, steel reinforcement, plumbing, the gunite shell, curing, and interior plaster all need to be completed in the right sequence before the pool is ready for use.
Pure Blue Luxury Pools and Outdoor Living builds custom inground pools throughout the Kansas City metro area, coordinating the construction process from the approved plan through final inspection and startup.
Building Pools for Kansas City Conditions
Ground conditions matter when building a pool in the Kansas City area. Clay-rich soils found throughout portions of the metro can expand and contract as moisture levels change, while saturated ground after heavy rain can affect excavation, equipment access, and construction timing. Freezing temperatures and freeze-thaw conditions also need to be considered when scheduling weather-sensitive stages of the build. Before excavation, the property is evaluated for access, elevations, drainage, utilities, and ground conditions that may affect construction. This allows the structural work to be approached according to the individual site rather than treating every backyard the same.
Requirements can also vary between municipalities on the Missouri and Kansas sides of the metro. Pure Blue coordinates the applicable permits and required inspections for the project so homeowners do not have to manage these construction approvals themselves.
Our 8-Step Pool Construction Process
Once the pool design is finalized and the required approvals are in place, construction moves through eight main stages.1. Site Evaluation and Permitting
Before work begins, the site is checked for construction access, pool placement, elevations, utilities, drainage, and other conditions that may affect the build. Pure Blue coordinates the applicable permits before excavation begins.2. Layout and Excavation
The approved pool shape is marked in the yard, giving you the first full-scale view of where the pool will sit. Excavation then forms the pool to its planned shape and depths. Digging commonly takes approximately 1 - 3 days, although weather, access, rock, and wet ground can extend this phase.3. Steel, Plumbing and Gunite Shell
Once the pool has been excavated, steel reinforcement is installed to create the structural framework. Plumbing lines and necessary electrical pathways are positioned before gunite is applied around the reinforced structure to form the permanent pool shell. This is the stage when the excavated space begins to look like an actual swimming pool. The gunite must then cure appropriately before later stages of construction move forward.
4. Waterline Tile
After the shell has cured sufficiently, waterline tile and other specified details are installed according to the approved selections. These elements begin bringing the finished appearance of the pool into the structural build.5. Coping and Pool Surrounds
Coping is installed along the pool edge, creating the transition between the shell and surrounding surface. Decking and adjacent hardscape work can then progress according to the project scope. Depending on the size and complexity of the project, tile, coping, and surrounding deck work may take approximately 2 - 4 weeks.6. Equipment and Connections
The pump, filtration system, heater where specified, lighting, controls, and other included equipment are connected and prepared for operation. At this point, much of the visible construction is complete and the pool is moving toward its final interior finish and startup.7. Interior Plaster and Filling
The selected plaster, pebble, quartz, or other interior finish is applied directly to the prepared pool shell. The pool is then filled according to the required startup procedure. Equipment is started and initial water chemistry is established to support proper curing of the new interior surface.8. Final Inspections and Startup
Pure Blue coordinates the applicable final inspections and checks the pool systems for proper operation. Once construction requirements are satisfied, the team walks through the completed pool and its operation with the homeowner so you know what to expect as you begin using and caring for it.How Long Does Pool Construction Take?
Most Pure Blue custom gunite pools take approximately 8 - 14 weeks from excavation to swim-ready. Design and permitting happen before that construction window and can add roughly 4 - 8 weeks, making 12 - 20 weeks a realistic overall planning range for many projects.Every property and pool is different, so these timeframes are estimates rather than guaranteed completion dates. Pool size and complexity, site access, ground conditions, weather, municipal approvals, inspections, and material availability can affect the schedule.
During construction, homeowners stay in communication with the Pure Blue team as the pool moves through each major phase. Pure Blue coordinates the construction crews, trades, scheduling, permits, and inspections while keeping you informed about progress and upcoming work.
